“The Seated Bather” Pierre-Auguste Renoir
The property of a gentleman’s estate. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist painter and a founding father of the movement. His style focused on capturing fleeting moments and the effects of light on everyday scenes, like landscapes, parks, and portraits of friends and family. He was especially interested in the female form, often depicting women in relaxed poses. Renoir’s technique used broken brushstrokes and bold complementary colors to capture light and movement. This painting has an inventory certificate verso that suggests its authenticity. It is from one of America’s greatest unknown museums – The California Palace of the Legion of Honor which was founded in 1924 by Adolph Spreckels. It is not known when it was archived by the museum.
